From Denise's warm welcome, to the well appointed room with ensuite bathroom, to the delicious walker's supper & breakfast, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! This was by far our best acommodation along Hardrian's Wall Path and only ~ .6 miles from the path.We highly recommend Brooksside Villa B&B to our fellow walkers.

Thanks for your kind remarks-dear reader please note Bob said POINT. 6 miles from the path - about 6 MINUTES walk! :-)

Brookside Villa has been my favorite lodging along the wall, thus far. Denise’s care was thorough, genuine, and friendly. The room was comfortable, the amenities thoughtful (even a little torch with the room key, should you walk about at night!), and the food absolutely delicious. We will return if we are ever back in the area!

This is a really lovely, friendly, welcoming guest house, ideal for those walking Hadrian's Wall. As a solo traveller I had a spotlessly clean large room with ensuite. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom clean and spacious with a lovely hot shower. Everything is catered for here including honesty bar with a wide selection of drinks and beverages and a handy "shop" for those vital necessities. The Walkers Supper was substantive and delicious with a good choice and the breakfast was likewise delicious with every taste catered for. A generous packed lunch is also available on request - ideal for walkers or day trippers. Denise is a kind, welcoming, friendly host. This was a definite highlight of my Hadrian's Wall walk experience. I strongly recommend Brookeside Villa.

The most delightful surprise of our stay was the lovely garden . The hosts provide information about the birds which can be seen flitting around the garden. Brookside provided accommodation for our large group of eight and everything was just perfect. I highly recommend Brookside for both Hadrian's Wall walkers or for a short break away.

We stayed one night at Brookside Villa as a stopover on the Hadrian’s Wall path. The double rooms had hotel quality beddings and modern bathrooms. We anticipated going out for dinner in town after checking in,however the nearby pubs had closed or were shut down. Fortunately our hostess Denise offered to prepare a charcuterie board for four and the self service honor bar had a good selection of wines and beers. The included breakfast was delicious. We would recommend this B&B for its location and good service.

Overall satisfied with accommodation, although the evening food could have been more traditional fayre. The price of beer was excessive. Our host was very friendly and made up a breakfast early as we were leaving early would stay again.
Response
Thanks for your review.and glad you were satisfied overall - a couple of points... re. evening meal- at the moment, as noted on our website, we are offering a walkers supper to fill the gap until our village pub reopens-sorry that your choice of Soup, Sausages with Baked Jacket Potato, Crumble and Custard were not your idea of "Traditional Fayre".Loads of reviewers below love the food.A pint bottle of local ale is £4.80 - about standard, and even a little below what you'd pay inpubs around here -but you're not forced to buy it!

We highly recommend Brookside Villa. We stayed here for 2 nights whilst walking Hadrian's Wall in the Easter holidays. Denise & Gerry were incredible hosts and soooo knowledgeable. Everything from the wall itself to why Cumbrian lambs are tougher than Northumbrian lambs and the geology of the countryside. The accommodation, food and service were excellent and we'd like to thank Denise for organising transit for one of our rucksacks because, as it turned out, days 3 & 4 would have been a nightmare carrying all of our stuff. Looking forward to next year. Thanks for a great experience Denise & Gerry.

My husband and I brought our two sons and their families (10 of us all together) from the states to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. From the very first inquiry to our last goodbye, our hostess, Denise, was most accommodating, welcoming, and kind. She called around to several restaurants to make us reservations, gladly washed several loads of laundry for us, gave us helpful tips on local attractions, and just made our 4 day stay the best! The rooms were immaculately clean, the breakfasts amazing with locally sourced ingredients, and the sitting room had a well- stocked honor bar. We had never explored this part of England and were in awe of its stunning natural beauty! If we ever return, we will stay at Brookside Villa!

We booked an overnight stay at the very last minute online. The booking process was easy and smooth. Upon arrival, we found our room to be airy and comfortable with a modern and delightful feel. Everything was extremely clean and convenient. The bathroom was spacious and the shower hot with good flow. At breakfast, all of the guests sat in a sunny dining area. Our hostess was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, serving a delicious breakfast and offering advice about local sights. This bed and breakfast is located near a portion of Hadrian's Wall, so most guests were either walking the trail or planning to visit one of the nearby forts. All in all, it was a lovely stay at a reasonable price. Thank you very much!

We used Brookside Villa as a base for three days whilst visiting the nearby Roman Forts, associated Museums and walking sections of the Wall. How lucky were we. As a base the location was perfect. Denise was the perfect Host and the breakfasts were superb. The House is a lovely Victorian Villa and the honesty bar in the main room was the most well stocked I’ve ever come across. It was nice to sit there with a glass of Red or G and T after walking back from the Samson Inn. Sent you off to bed with a warm glow. The Samson Inn, a ten minute walk away, is recommended also, as the food was very good and the Staff welcoming. We have no hesitation in highly recommending Brookside Villa as a base or simply a one night stopover whilst walking the Wall.

Brookside Villa was the most comfortable and friendly of the hotels and B&B’s that my friend and I stayed at during our coast to coast walk. Denise made us feel at home as soon as we arrived and kindly booked a meal and bag service for us.The rooms are cosy, the beds are excellent, and the piping hot shower was a god send after a long walk. Both breakfast and the packed lunch were fantastic.I plan to return to the area to spend more time looking at the Roman sites in the area and will definitely be choosing Brookside Villa as the base for that trip.

Stayed for 1 night with a friend as part of the Hadrian's Wall walk. From the moment we arrived (Denise had even phoned the local pub to see if we had eaten there first as we had not arrived at the expected time - how lovely to know that someone would have missed us) until the time we left, everything was wonderful. The room was spacious and spotless, the beds super comfy, the shower powerful. Denise had clearly thought through the needs of walkers and had plenty of Compeed in stock! Breakfast was delicious and hearty and set us up for another day's walking. It would be lovely to come back and spend a few days in this wonderful place

A veritable haven for myself and my fellow walker after finishing a challenging section of Hadrian's Wall. We were greeted by Denise who had, shortly after booking sent out an email that was informative and witty about tackling the Hadrian's Wall walk, Gilsland itself and what the accommodation offered. We were most grateful for the laundry service provided. The room( Including a very good shower) and breakfast were at top of the various establishments we stopped in along the way. Denise herself was friendly, cheerful and a very efficient host. I'm seriously considering returning to this area for a weekend with my wife and would have no hesitation in booking into here again.

We were a family of 4 travelling up to Scotland and made the overnight stop at Hadrian’s Wall. This B&B was one of our favourites from our road trip.Comfy beds and nice rooms.Good sized bathrooms with great showers. The breakfast was good with local produce and it was well located (only a couple of miles from Birdsowald Fort in a quiet location). With good local knowledge and great tips on how to make the most of our very short stay (we arrive at 4pm and were leaving after breakfast), it made for a good place to stay around Hadrian’s Wall.

We stayed at Brookside just for one night as we were doing the Hadrian's wall walk. The bedroom and the bathroom was clean and tidy. Denise was very helpful and friendly. She has definitely mastered the art of making a good full English. The eggs were perfectly cooked. There are toiletries and other items that you can buy. Denise had feminine hygiene products available that she kindly gave free of charge. This was extremely useful as there were no shops nearby to buy them. There is also a beautiful garden where you can relax when the weather is good. Overall, our stay was pleasant and relaxing. Would definitely recommend this place.

The best place we stayed during our Hadrians Wall bike. Really friendly owners. Our Reservation at the pub was cancelled for supper and so we had supper there, it was delicious. Can’t recommend this b&B enough.Room was spacious and beds comfortable. Breakfast was tasty. We got their packed lunch for the next day as it was a long walk for us, loads of things in it.

Denise met us with a warm welcome and ran through everything we needed to know about meals. Our room was light and spacious. The B&B was delightful, lovely pictures and furnishings. There was a garden to sit in to rest weary legs and a lounge with honesty bar. Breakfast and packed lunches were delicious. One of the best places we stayed on the trail

We stayed for 5 nights as we walked along Hadrian's Wall for 4 days. Denise and Gerry, our hosts provided very comfortable clean accommodation, excellent breakfasts, packed lunches when needed, guided us to our finish point for our car and then dropped us to our daily start point armed with all the relevant information we needed. Relaxing guest lounge and garden outside.

Having spent a day hiking the HWP, Brookside Villa B&B was a haven to relax, refresh and regroup.A four bed family room with en-suite bath/shower and toilet had all the amenities: tv, hair dryer, tea/coffee making facilities etc.The room was spotless let clean, light, welcoming and the beds soft and comfortable. From our very arrival Denise was a wonderful host, offering to cook evening meal or lunch. The bar facility was very much appreciated.Breakfast was delicious with a greasy choice.Overall a fantastic stay and we recommend the Brookside Villa wholeheartedly.

We felt very welcome from the moment we arrived and Denise could not have been more helpful. The beds were very comfortable, the water hot.Supper (ordered in from the local pub) and breakfast were excellent. The only slight downside was the noise from the road which turned out to be busier than we expected. We would be happy to stay at Brookside Villa again.

This is a Victorian era house converted into guest rooms. It is in a (mostly) quiet area near Hadrian's Wall.We only needed it for one night on our way back from northern Scotland. It lives up to its name in that there is a babbling brook just at the edge of the property with small well kept garden areas. It was generally very quiet and one could just hear the brook at night.Unfortunately, there was the odd car speeding on the small road next to the, but these were only about two in the hour around midnight. There is parking for 2-3 vehicles in front. The rooms we had were fitted with laminate floors. This was a problem for our elderly dog who has mobility issues in the best of times, but, fortunately, we had some rubber-backed rugs to hand. Our friends in room 1 had plenty of space. The double bed in room 3 did not leave much free floor space.A toilet, sink, and shower were squeezed into a back corner.there was no vent or window for the toilet, I presume, due to difficulty of installing one through rock walls. The room was clean and, due to Covid pandemic , just about everything was wrapped in plastic. Spray disinfectant was supplied.Pillows and top bedding were ok, but the mattress a bit on the hard side.Breakfast options were typical of what is offered elsewhere. The conservatory made for a nice place to eat on a sunny morning.Because we (4 adults and 3 dogs) were the only guests, this worked ok, but I imagine if the other rooms were all booked, it would have been less relaxing.Better mattresses and ventilation would go a long way to improving as would considering making the smaller room(s) singles.
Response
Wow ! - and you were only here for 14 hours. I wonder how much detail you could have recorded with more time! :-)If you can recommend better mattress that Hypnos (£500 per single) please let me know.Sorry the old dog had a problem with the floors - better than carpet though?for the humans afterwards?

Denise worked hard to make us comfortable, she was very flexible when we arrived early and soaked to the skin! Small drying area worked well and plenty of paper for our boots. They went and picked up a takeaway for us from the pub and served us in the breakfast room which was excellent. Sadly we couldn't sample her breakfast as we had to be away but again, she had left us something in the fridge for the morning. Very good stay, thank you again!

Due to our excellent breakfast, although we were tempted, we didn't dive into the baps until we stopped for lunch but they were well worth the wait.A thousand thanks Denise for your hospitality and for sharing your home. When planning our Hadrian's Wall walk we noticed that if we stayed at least 2 nights at Brookside then the hosts would offer lifts. On reflection we realised that staying 4 nights in one place and using Gilsland as a base would be really quite useful and i would thoroughly recommend this strategy. Denise and Gerry are great hosts and Gerry ferried us around so that we could have a series of 10 mile walks along HWW. We found staying in one place rather than moving every day really helped. The accommodation is great and the food was excellent, particulalry the tomatoes and poached eggs! I think that was my favourite meal all week. Big thanks to you both.
